Directory Services

In addition to registering your site with the major search engines, it is important that it be listed in appropriate human-compiled internet directories.

To get your site listed in a directory, you must find an appropriate directory category, write a brief but descriptive synopsis of your site and submit the URL.   It can take several weeks or months before your page is added.  Many are not.

Open Directory Project (also called ODP and DMOZ)

The Open Directory is the largest and most important directory in the world. It uses volunteer editors to catalog directory submissions.  The listings then feed search engines including Lycos, AOL and HotBot.  Even Google, uses some content from the Open Directory Project.

Yahoo! Directory

Yahoo operates a large hierarchical directory system.  Unlike Open Directory, the company charges an annual fee to be included in their database.
